Did you know the game of pickleball is one of the country's most popular growing sports among all ages and the fastest growing sport in America, for people age 50 and above? This racquet sport combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis using a smaller court than tennis and a ball similar to a whiffle ball.
The game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, at the home of former State Representative Joel Pritchard. He and two of his friends, returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton, but no one cound find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a whiffle ball, lowered the badminton net and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. And, as they say, the rest is history.
Due to increasing demand for pickleball courts the Parks Division had yellow lines painted on the tennis courts at Jim Jeffers Park, Burton Memorial Park, Joe Stonis Park and Camelot Park.
